Tesla uses its battery expertise in businesses that go far beyond cars. General Motors believes it can do that, too.

Tuesday, GM (ticker: GM) introduced GM Energy, a business unit that will leverage the company’s battery technology for residential and commercial power-storage applications. GM is even working with SunPower (SPWR) to integrate solar panels with battery energy storage for residential customers.
